How to remove bird droppings from your car
The safe way to get bird poop off your paint without scratches or etching — takes about 15 minutes.
What you need
- ✓ Quick detailer or waterless wash
- ✓ 2–3 clean, plush microfiber towels
- ✓ Water spray bottle
- ✓ Fine polish (only if etched)
- ✓ Spray sealant or wax
1. Act fast

Bird droppings contain uric acid that can etch clear coat within hours on a hot, sunny day. Remove them as soon as you spot them — ideally the same day.
- Keep a quick detailer and a clean microfiber towel in the car.
- Park the car in the shade first if you can; heat speeds up etching.
Avoid: Don't wait until the next wash, especially in summer.
2. Soften, don't scrub

Spray the dropping generously with quick detailer, waterless wash or plain water, then lay a soaked microfiber towel over it for 2–5 minutes. This rehydrates dried droppings so they release without force.
- Re-wet the towel if it starts drying out.
- For hard, baked-on droppings, leave it 10 minutes.
Avoid: Never scrape with a fingernail, a dry tissue or a paper towel — grit in the dropping scratches the paint.
3. Lift it off in one motion
Pinch the towel and lift the softened dropping straight up, then gently wipe the remaining residue in one direction with a clean side of the towel. Use light pressure only.
- Fold the towel so each wipe uses a fresh, clean side.
- Repeat the soak if anything sticks.
Avoid: No circular rubbing — it grinds seeds and grit into the clear coat.
4. Rinse and dry the spot
Spray the area once more with detailer or water and dry it with a clean, soft microfiber towel so no acid residue is left behind.
- Check the spot from different angles in daylight.
Avoid: Don't let the area air-dry in the sun — that leaves water spots.
5. Check for etching and protect

If a dull ring or crater remains, the clear coat is etched. Light etching usually comes out with a fine polish by hand or machine; deep etching needs a professional. Finish with a spray sealant, wax or ceramic coating so the next dropping is easier to remove.
- A protected car gives you much more time before damage occurs.
- Reapply spray sealant every few weeks.
Avoid: Avoid aggressive compounds on a small spot unless you know how to blend the finish.
